Do you know when Easter is?

I am sure that many of you have not thought about when Easter Sunday is…well I have. I guess that is kind of in my job description 😊. I have a few things ruminating in my heart when it comes to this special day. It is the day that changed everything! It is the day that we celebrate Christ raising from the dead.

When I was a kid, it was among the top holidays that I looked forward to celebrating; not because it was about Christ but because it was about me…the new clothes I would get...the eggs to color…and ALL the candy I would enjoy. I remember one Easter that I was particularly fond of. I was in junior high school and very aware of girls, how I looked and how people perceived me. I picked out the best leisure suit ever. It was a light blue polyester suit with a multicolored shirt, accented with “platform” shoes that elevated my little boy stature by two or three inches. I worked on my afro the night before. I had to braid it up so that it would be as long and full as possible. The next day I picked it out my hair, took my time to shape it just right…and I do mean JUST RIGHT! I got dressed, popped my collar over that baby blue suit, stood back, stared in the mirror for a few minutes to make sure that everything was together. It was.

We made our way to church that morning, got there late, as usual, but I didn’t care, I “looked good” to me anyway 😉. I don’t remember the sermon; I’m sure it was about Jesus in some way. But my focus was on me, my clothes, people’s reactions, the eggs, candy and our family gathering after church.

Sure enough, I was not disappointed. People commented on how I looked. “You look like Michael Jackson.” (well…the Michael Jackson before all the work done). I received lots of Easter eggs, candy and we had a huge family dinner at my Aunt Georgia Mae’s house. It was an Easter to remember.

Looking back though, it was an Easter where Christ was forgotten.

My heart grieves as I think about this time long ago; not because of my lack of Christ-centeredness (I didn’t know Him then), but because of how the Body of Christ treats this most wonderful of holidays. We too get caught up in all the external, commercial trappings that accompany the world’s way of celebrating Easter. We have totally allowed OUR holiday to be highjacked! This is THE holiday that belongs to us! This is the day the we celebrate our risen Savior. Salvation, redemption, adoption, justification and all the other “tions” were verified, sealed and delivered through the resurrection Jesus. Victory has been declared over sin, hell and the grave! Death has been overcome! All because of the resurrection. There should be dancing in the streets right about now.

As a believer in Christ we rejoice because of the death, burial and RESURRECTION of Christ. We are no longer bound and doomed to sin. We have been raised and will ultimately be raised to new life…why? Because of the RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ! Got it? It’s the empty tomb that allows us to have life. Otherwise He would just be another martyr who is still in the ground and we would still be lost and in our sin.

1 Corinthians 15:17–22 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Are you reading and getting this! Whew! WOW! Hallelujah!

I know Easter is a few weeks away, but you need to start figuring out how you are going to celebrate it. Please don’t miss this opportunity to honor, show off, talk about and worship our risen Savior. Who cares about the other things…eggs…clothes…candy…afro’s…etc.? Let’s take back our holiday, not through protests or judgmentalism or pride or rejection of culture but let’s take it back through unashamed, unrehearsed, untethered, unhindered worship!

Victory is yours because of the Resurrection…act like it…live like it!
